The "Do's And Don'ts" of Halloween on Campus

Posted by Belajar Musik on Kamis, 30 Oktober 2014

Halloween is personally one of my favorite times of year.  With all the candy, costumes, decorations, and scares, I find the 31st to be a particularly wonderful excuse to celebrate, especially during this gloomy midterm time of the school year.

Read on to find out how you should be spending your Halloween this year, and if you think you might be too old to trick-or-treat.

While there is much to be excited about with Halloween falling on a Friday this year, not everything with this spooky holiday is fun and games.  Last minute costume emergencies, nut allergies, embarrassing pranks, and double-bookings can put an unexpected kink in your plans.

To help you avoid some of the potential goofs, here’s a quick list of Halloween do’s and don’t for celebrating at the U.

1) DON’T be that guy or girl who shows up to their midterm wearing an obtrusive or generally inconvenient costume. While distracting other classmates from their exam may seem like an advantage, chances are your own grades take a hit with their dirty looks and your pinching fairy wings disrupting your own test.

This one comes with free snacks, but is not very desk-accessible.

2) DO show your Halloween spirit by donning a subtle costume, or other festive attire. Bring out the funky nails, crazy-colored contacts, vampire teeth, skull shirts, and zombie hair!  And don’t forget to compliment others for having the courage to dress up for school!

3) DON’T expect that giving out candy to your professors, TAs and classmates will serve as an effective bribe. Just by satisfying our sugar fixes doesn’t mean that you deserve any extra points besides your good Halloween-manship. That being said…DO bring us candy! :D

4) DON’T try to get everyone on the LRT into Halloween mode by scaring them! Besides your cheerful proclamation of “Happy Halloween” there should be no screams heard on public transport. Save the tricks for unsuspecting trick-or-treating children (kidding).

5) DON’T post corny Halloween jokes on your class’ Eclass Discussion Board. There are only so many we can handle.

Just no.

Jokes aside, we wish you a very fun-filled Halloween! We hope you have the chance to take a break from homework to celebrate in the manner that best suits you. If you are too busy cramming to partake in any festivities, at the very least please treat yourself to some sugary snacks, and take a listen to the songs below for an old-meets-new Halloween-themed study tracklist.

Thriller- Michael Jackson
Monster Mash- Bobby Boris Pickett & the Crypt-Kickers
Ghostbusters- Ray Parker Jr.
Superstition- Stevie Wonder
Tainted Love- Mariyln Manson
Tarantula- Pendulum
Disturbia- Rihanna
True Blood- Justin Timberlake
This is Halloween- Disney
Psycho Killer- Talking Heads
Sympathy For the Devil- The Rolling Stones
Omen- The Prodigy
Howlin’ For You- The Black Keys
Black Widow- Iggy Azalea Rita Ora

Happy Halloween!

Kiera

My name is Kiera and I’m a fourth year Biological Sciences student with an English minor, trying to keep life interesting. I like to consider myself a glass-half-full type, and am most at peace spending quality time with loved ones (with a little wine and cheese on hand). When I’m not trying to balance my student group with studying, I am testing out different hobbies, slowly working towards becoming a jack-of-all-trades and master of none.

I am drawn to creativity and adventure, which there seems to be an abundance of amongst the U of A’s bright students. I hope to shed light on some of the inspirational individual stories that have resulted from unique campus opportunities, and also hope to encourage other students to tap into one of the many meaningful learning opportunities that are available outside of the classroom. I hope you’ll join me in celebrating the U of A’s stories that make our campus community so rich with experience and opportunity.
